The basics

What is a Professional Year Program?

A Professional Year Program is a structured career-development program designed for eligible international graduates in selected professional fields. Programs generally combine formal learning, workplace-readiness training and an industry internship.

What these programs generally involve

  • Normally completed over approximately 12 months
  • Designed to improve understanding of the Australian workplace
  • Includes professional communication and workplace-readiness training
  • Generally includes an internship or practical workplace component
  • Availability and eligibility are controlled by the relevant professional body and education provider

Important to understand

A Professional Year Program is not available in every occupation or to every visa holder. It is a course, not a visa, and completing it does not by itself lead to permanent residence.

General information

Who May Be Eligible?

Eligibility depends on your qualification, occupation, visa status, English ability and the professional body's current requirements. The points below are considerations to check, not an assessment.

ICT Professional Year

Applicants generally need to consider:

  • An Australian ICT-related degree at bachelor level or higher
  • The Australian Study Requirement
  • Visa status and remaining visa validity
  • Work and study rights
  • English-language requirements
  • ACS admission criteria
  • The provider's own admission requirements

Eligibility rules may differ depending on the applicant's qualification, completion date, visa status and the current ACS requirements.

Engineering Professional Year

Applicants generally need to consider:

  • An eligible Australian engineering qualification
  • Engineers Australia requirements
  • Visa status
  • Full work and study rights
  • Sufficient remaining visa validity
  • English-language requirements
  • Skills-assessment or qualification-recognition requirements
  • Current program-intake rules

Student visa subclass 500 holders should not assume they are eligible for the Engineering Professional Year. Current eligibility must be checked with Engineering Education Australia or the delivery provider.

Holding a visa does not by itself establish eligibility

Professional Year eligibility is not determined only by holding a temporary visa. Some programs may be limited to subclass 485 visa holders or certain bridging-visa holders connected with an eligible visa application. This is general information, not an exhaustive statement of the rules.

Professional Year and Skilled Migration Points

Completing an eligible Professional Year Program may allow an applicant to claim additional points under the General Skilled Migration points test where all legislative requirements are satisfied.

Under the points test, 5 points are available where - at the time of invitation - the applicant had completed a professional year in Australia in their nominated skilled occupation or a closely related skilled occupation, for a period totalling at least 12 months in the 48 months immediately before that time.

Completing the course does not guarantee that the points can be claimed. The program, occupation, completion period and other requirements must be checked at the time of invitation and visa application.
