Australia's skilled migration visas (subclasses 189, 190 and 491) use a points test. You need to reach a minimum score to be invited to apply - and because invitations are competitive, a higher score helps.
The pass mark
The minimum to be invited is currently 65 points. In practice, though, many invitations go to applicants with higher scores, so it's worth understanding how to strengthen your points.
What earns you points
- Your age (the highest points are usually in your late 20s to early 30s)
- Your English language ability
- Skilled work experience, in Australia and overseas
- Your qualifications and Australian study
- State or territory nomination, or regional sponsorship
- Your partner's skills or English - or having no partner, or a partner who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident
Small changes add up
Improving your English test result, gaining more experience, or securing state nomination can each lift your score. Because the rules and thresholds change over time, it's worth getting a current assessment of where you stand.
