Choosing someone to help with your visa is an important decision - the outcome can shape your whole future. Here are the things worth checking before you commit.
Check they're registered
In Australia, anyone who gives immigration assistance for a fee generally must be a registered migration agent (or an Australian legal practitioner). Registered agents have a Migration Agents Registration Number (MARN) and are regulated by the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA).
You can search the public register on the OMARA website (mara.gov.au) to confirm anyone's registration before you engage them.
Look for honesty, not promises
No one can honestly guarantee a visa - decisions are made by the Australian Government. Be cautious of anyone who promises a particular outcome. A good agent explains your realistic options, including when something isn't likely to work.
Questions worth asking
- What is your MARN, and how long have you been registered?
- Have you handled cases like mine before?
- What are your fees, and what do they cover?
- What are my realistic chances, and what could go wrong?
